Update (by Fabiènne Doveren)
Update #1 – A fresh start in 2019
It has been a while since we had our last sailing expedition in 2018 but we haven’t been idle.
Involving the crowd BTOWU-style
2018 was a great year for the battle against plastic pollution and for By The Ocean We Unite. 283 participants have sailed with us, we have reached over 800 children through extensive education projects, 2450 through other events and millions via the media, including our National Geographic series. In 2019, we will continue to spread the love for our oceans and we are preparing for upcoming sailing expeditions. Our science team has been busy analyzing the microplastic data collected over the past three years, and since we are growing rapidly we have been taking steps to scale up our organization. So it’s time for this update on preparations for the 2019 sailing season and our coming land-based activities.
Upcoming sailing expeditions
During the Easter holidays, we are organizing a two-day Mini Expedition on the Wadden Sea. On the 20th and 21st of April, you are welcome to sail with us on the Storebealt. We will sail from Harlingen to Terschelling and back. More details can be found here. If you think 2 days of sailing is way too short, don’t worry! We are planning a longer expedition to the UK in the late summer as well.
Several companies have already agreed to sail with us in the spring of 2019, but we still have space for more. If you are looking for a unique team building event for your company, come join us on a one or two (or more!) day expedition. You will learn all about plastic pollution and participate in our microplastic scientific research while experiencing the joy of sailing and a great couple days of teambuilding! We are happy to organize a tailor-made company outing for you. Contact our Event Manager Nella van Braam (firstname.lastname@example.org or +31-6-50742764) for more information.
Micro plastic data presentation
In 2018 we have added a lot of new microplastic samples to our data set and we can’t wait to share our findings with you and the rest of the world. To this end, we will organize an event on the 1st of April where our science team will present the results of our microplastic research over the last three years. We hope to welcome many of our former expedition members and supporting parties. Save the date, more info will follow soon. Can’t wait till April 1st? Check out the ‘About our research’ page for a sneak peek.
In cooperation with ‘Grondstofjutters/We Are Nature’, we will continue our education projects in high schools in and around Leiden, Katwijk, Hoorn and The Hague. In addition, we will sail with ‘School at Sea’ / ‘Windseeker’ during the summer months to Norway, Sweden, Denmark and London. Of course, we will bring along our Manta trawl to collect microplastic samples.
Sail with you soon!
